Description: “(1914-2005) USMA 1936, graduated 1st in his class, Creighton Abrams and Benjamin O. Davis Jr. his classmates. Served in ETO in WW II, became chief of staff of 9th Infantry Div. Oct. 1944. In Jan. 1964, became Deputy Commander of Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV), assuming direct control from General Paul Harkins, and became known for his positive assessments of US military prospects and regular requests for increases in US troop strength (at 16,000 when he arrived, 535,000 in 1968 when he left). Commanded US military operations in the Vietnam, including the Tet Offensive, used strategy of attrition against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese. US Army Chief of Staff 1968-72. Ran unsuccessfully for Governor of South Carolina in 1974.
