Description: “(1897-1978) Irish-American boxer from 1915-28, world heavyweight champion 1926-28, US light heavyweight twice 1922-23. A highly technical boxer, Tunney had a 5-fight rivalry with Harry Greb and won 3, drew once, and lost once. He also knocked out Georges Carpentier and defeated Jack Dempsey twice, in 1926 and 1927. His successful title defense against Dempsey, “The Long Count Fight”, remains one of the most famous bouts in boxing history. He retired undefeated as a heavyweight in 1928. Tunney fought some 68 official professional fights, losing only one while fighting as a light heavyweight. Tunney also had a brief acting career, starring in the movie “The fighting Marine” in 1926; no prints of the film exist. He was elected as Ring Magazine’s 1st Fighter of the Year in 1928 and elected to the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1980, the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990, and the US Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. Tunney was never knocked out, only ever being knocked down once, in his 2nd fight with Dempsey in the infamous Long Count. In 1932, Tunney published a book, “A Man Must Fight”, in which he gave comments on his career and boxing techniques.
