Truman, Harry S

The former President complies (twice) with an autograph request

Autograph ID: 2526
Condition: Very good
Description: (1884-1972) Missouri Senator, VP 1945, President 1945-1953 succeeding to office on death of FDR, elected in own right 1948.

TLS on 10 ½ x 7 ¼ engraved “Harry S. Truman/ Independence, Missouri” engraved letterhead, August 31, 1962, to Mrs. Eleanor Bailey, Bloomfield, Connecticut. The former President is glad to autograph a postcard for Mrs. Bailey which he encloses (not present here), her request garnering her two Truman autographs!

The “.” after the “S” should not have been in the letterhead as the “S” was simply that-it had no special significance and was not an abbreviation of any other name. “S” was chosen by his parents to avoid a display of favoritism between his paternal grandparents (his grandfather’s name was Anderson Shippe Truman) and his maternal grandparents (his other grandfather was Solomon Young).
Type: Letter
