Description: “(b. 1949) One of the greatest African-American lyric-spinto sopranos, she started singing in the choir of her father’s Baptist church in Enid, Oklahoma. She.received her bachelors in music from the Oklahoma City University, went on to graduate studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. In 1973, she debuted in “Carmen” with the San Francisco Opera and received international attention in the first complete stereo recording of Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” with the Cleveland Orchestra. In 1988 Mitchell performed the role of Liù in “Turandot” at the Metropolitan Opera where she performed for 18 consecutive seasons, and where 11 of her 15 roles there have been in operas by Puccini or Verdi. It was at the Metropolitan Opera that Ms. Mitchell premiered the eagerly awaited production of “Aida” in 1988. She has sung nearly 200 performances of this opera throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
