Description: (1908-1993) Notable civil rights attorney with NAACP Legal Defense Fund and chief strategist for legal assault to desegregate public school systems culminating in 1954 Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision. He served on the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, appointed by President Kennedy, then served as Solicitor General being appointed by President Johnson in 1965. Associate Justice 1967-91, 1st African-American on Court. Authored significant decisions inc. Stanley v. Georgia (1969, right to read anything, inc. obscene materials, in privacy of one’s home), Benton v. Maryland (double jeopardy in criminal cases applies to states and federal government); adamantly opposed capital punishment.

Signed engraved  3 ½ x 4 ½ “Supreme Court of the United States/Washington, D.C. 20543” notecard. With 1979 TLS on his Chambers letterhead from his secretary regarding sources for portraits of the Justices + color portrait.
