Description: “(b. 1936) NASA astronaut, member of the 2nd manned crew on the Skylab space station, commanded the 3rd space shuttle mission. 1984 GOP nominee for the US Senate for Michigan, lost to Carl Levin. 1959 BS degree in Aeronautical Engineering from University of Michigan, 1965 MS degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the US Naval Postgraduate School in 1965. Fellow of the American Astronautical Society; member of the Society of the Sigma Xi,, and the Association of Space Explorers. Awarded Navy Astronaut Wings (1974), 1973 Robert J. Collier Trophy, 1975 Dr. Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy, 1975 AIAA Octave Chanute Award, 1974 AAS Flight Achievement Award; inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame 1982, 2nd NASA Distinguished Service Medal (1982), amongst others. US Marine Corps officer 1959, received his wings in 1960. One of 19 astronauts selected by NASA in April 1966. Member of the astronaut support crews for Apollo 9, 10, and 13 missions, and was the capcom recipient of the “Houston, we’ve had a problem” message from Apollo 13. Pilot for Skylab 3 (July 28 to September 25, 1973; Alan Bean spacecraft commander, and Owen K. Garriott science-pilot) and commander on STS-3, the 3rd orbital test flight of space shuttle Columbia (C. Gordon Fullerton, pilot, March 22–30, 1982), logging a total of over 1,619 hours in space. Lousma also spent 11 hours on two spacewalks outside the Skylab space station. He also served as backup docking module pilot of the US flight crew for the July 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) mission. Lousma left NASA in 1983.
