Description: (b.1941 Bolivian-born violinist, conductor and music director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra since 1999.
Began his musical career at 5, in 1948 came to the US and studied under Antonio de Grassi, Frank Houser, Josef Gingold, then with Ivan Galamian at the Curtis Institute of Music. He is currently a professor at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
His 1960 Carnegie Hall recital was much praised, and helped launch his career. In 1961 he played at London’s Royal Albert Hall and has played with many major European and American orchestras. He also plays viola and has recorded piano quartets with Isaac Stern, Yo-Yo Ma, and Emanuel Ax and with them was awarded a 1992 Grammy for Best Chamber Music Performance. He also collaborated with pianist Glenn Gould. He is the violinist of the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio. He and his wife, Sharon Robinson, have been with the string faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music since 2012.
