Description: “(1933-2014) USAF officer, to NASA 1969, 2 months after September 1969 Apollo 11 lunar landing. Served on support crew for Apollo 16, Skylab 2, 3, & 4. Piloted June 1982 Space Shuttle Columbia mission STS-4 with spacecraft commander Ken Mattingly, the last mission before NASA declared the Space Shuttle operational. Commander Discovery on its Aug. 1984 maiden flight. STS-41D crew earned nickname "Icebusters" when Hartsfield successfully removed hazardous ice-buildup using the Remote Manipulator System arm. His 3rd and last mission, STS-61A, was the first planned and controlled by a foreign customer, the West German D-1 Spacelab mission. It was also the first to fly 8 crew members. He retired from NASA 1998.
