Description: “(1820-1899) Iowa Free Soil & Republican US Senator 1855-65, 1867-73. Secretary of the Interior under President Andrew Johnson 1865-66. As Secretary, fired numerous employees, inc. poet Walt Whitman. Resigned in 1866 when he no longer supported President Johnson. One of 2 Iowans whose sculptured likeness is under the Rotunda in Statuary Hall in the US Capitol in Washington. Close friend of President Lincoln and his family, his daughter married Robert Todd Lincoln 1868.
