Description: “(1873-1963) Lyricist-librettist of some 50 musical comedies, playwright, member of the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. Born in Salt Lake City to Danish immigrant parents, collaborated as lyricist or librettist with Rudolf Friml, Oscar Hammerstein II, Jerome Kern, Vincent Youmans, George Gershwin, and Sigmund Romberg, amongst others. Charter member of ASCAP 1914, Director 1920-63, VP 1936-40, President 1950-53.

Lyricist for many songs now in standard repertoire, including “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “Indian Love Call,” “Cuddle Up a Little Closer,” “I Won’t Dance” and “She Didn’t Say Yes”. Wrote plays inc. “Madame Sherry” 1909, “Girl of My Dreams” 1910, “The Firefly” 1912, “High Jinks” 1913, “The Silent Witness” 1915.

His Broadway hit shows inc. Roberta, 1933 (with Kern), Rose-Marie 1924 (with Friml), No! No! Nanette 1924 (lyrics with Irving Caesar, music by Youmans, book by Harbach & Frank Mandel), The Desert Song 1926 (with Romberg,), Cat and the Fiddle (with Kern) 1931, etc.
