Description: “(1898-1980) SEC Commissioner 1936 & Chairman 1937-39, Associate Justice 1939-1975. Great civil libertarian, authored opinion in Griswold v. Connecticut (1965) which established a constitutional right to privacy. Noted outdoorsman, environmentalist and author.
TLS while Associate Justice on 9 x 5 3/4 Court Chambers letterhead, Washington, November 15 1951, to a New York man. Douglas thanks him for his gracious letter and generous comments on his 1951 book, “Strange Lands and Friendly People” and is happy he enjoyed it. “Strange Lands and Friendly People” was about 2 of Douglas’ journeys to the Near and Middle East in 1949 & 1950. The 1951 travel narrative also touched on problems besetting the area, shortcomings of American attitudes and policies, and the types of social and economic measures which Douglas felt were necessary.”
