3 ¾ x 6 ½ Artcraft cacheted envelope with engraving of President Clinton and The White House commemorating President Clinton’s 1993 inauguration as 42nd US President with Washington DC, January 20 1993 “Inauguration Day” postmark. President Clinton signs in the white area, inked note in another hand on verso reads “Rutgers 1993”. Rare early in-person presidential autograph, most uncommon in this format! Signed March 2, 1993.
President Clinton chose Rutgers to announce the establishment of AmeriCorps on March 2, 1993. Speaking to what The New York Times called “a wildly enthusiastic Rutgers University audience” at the Rutgers Athletic Center, the president called on young people to answer the call to public service in the same spirit as an earlier generation joined the Peace Corps, founded on the same day, 32 years earlier. AmeriCorps is a voluntary civil society program supported by the federal government, foundations, corporations, and other donors engaging adults in public service work with a goal of “helping others and meeting critical needs in the community.” Members commit to full-time or part-time positions offered by a network of nonprofit community organizations and public agencies, in education, public safety, health care, and environment protection, akin to a “domestic Peace Corps”, employing 75,000+ Americans each year. It was created under President Clinton by the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993, incorporating VISTA and the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). AmeriCorps first became operational in 1994.”
