W. Bush’s VP running mate, defeating the Democrats’ Gore-Lieberman ticket; in 2004, the Bush-Cheney ticket defeated the Kerry-Edwards ticket. While VP, he played a leading behind-the-scenes role in the Bush Administration’s response to the September 11 attacks and coordination of the global war on terrorism. He was an early proponent of invading Iraq and defender of the Bush Administration’s anti-terrorism record. Cheney was often criticized for Administration policies on the campaign against terrorism, NSA wiretapping, and torture of prisoners.
