Description: “(1904-1971) African-American diplomat, Howard University professor 1928-50. With OSS 1941-44, collaborated with Gunnar Myrdal on “American Dilemma” 1944, with State Dept. 1944-47. UN Trusteeship Director 1947-57, UN Under Secretary 1955, Secretary of Special Political Affairs 1957-70. Succeeded assassinated Count Bernadotte as chief UN mediator in Palestine 1948, later helped mediate disputes in Suez, Congo, Yemen & Cyprus crises. Awarded 1949 NAACP Spingarn Medal, 1950 Nobel Peace Prize, and 1963 Medal of Freedom from President Kennedy.

1964 United Nations Education for Progress stamp 3 ¾ x 6 ½ cacheted envelope postmarked United Nations, New York, December 7 1964 “First Day of Issue”, boldly signed by Bunche. Stamp was issued while he was the UN’s Secretary of Special Political Affairs 1957-70.”
