Description: (B. 1931) USMC pilot 1953-57, Lockheed flight test engineer 1960-66. One of 19 pilot astronauts selected by NASA in April 1966, he was backup command module pilot for Apollo 15 and backup commander for Skylab 3 & 4. Brand was command module pilot on 1975 Apollo-Soyuz, and commander of STS-5 (1982), STS-41-B (1984), and STS-35 (1990) Space Shuttle missions. He was the only Apollo-era astronaut to pilot the Space Shuttle in the post-Challenger era. He retired from the Astronaut Office in 2008. He was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame in 1996, the US Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1997, and the International Aerospace Hall of Fame in 2001.
