Description: (1908-1999) Minnesota lawyer, resident counsel for Mayo Clinic 1950-59. Nicknamed “Old No. 3”, received his commission to fill Abe Fortas’ seat following contentious battles over 2 previous, failed nominations forwarded by Nixon in 1969–1970, G. Harrold Carswell and Clement Haynsworth. Assoc. Justice 1970-94, authored the Court’s majority opinion in the 1973 controversial abortion decision, Roe v. Wade, for which he was regularly villified. Warren Burger, best man at his wedding, was a long-time friend and both were originally nicknamed the “Minnesota Twins”; Blackmun voted with Burger in 87.5% of closely-divided cases during his first 5 terms (1970-75) and in the final 5 years that Blackmun and Burger served together, he joined Burger in only 32.4% of cases.
