Description: “JACK LOUSMA (b. 1936) NASA astronaut, member of the 2nd manned Skylab space station crew in 1973. In 1982, he commanded STS-3, the 3rd space shuttle mission. He became a Marine Corps officer in 1959, receiving his aviator wings in 1960. Lousma was one of 19 astronauts selected by NASA in April 1966. He was a member of the astronaut support crews for the Apollo 9, 10, & 13 missions. He was CAPCOM recipient of the Apollo 13 “Houston, we’ve had a problem” message. He was the pilot for the 1973 Skylab 3 mission with Alan Bean & Owen Garriott and was commander on the 1982 STS-3, 3rd orbital test flight of Space Shuttle Columbia, with pilot Gordon Fullerton, logging 1,619+ hours in space. He also spent 11 hours on 2 spacewalks outside the Skylab space station. He was also backup docking module pilot of the US flight crew for the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz mission. Lousma left NASA and retired from the Marine Corps in 1983. He was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal (1973), the 1973 Robert J. Collier Trophy, the 1975 Dr. Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy, the 1975 AIAA Octave Chanute Award, and inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame in 1982. In 1984, he ran for the US Senate, losing to incumbent Carl Levin. ALAN L. BEAN (1932-2018) US naval aviator, aeronautical engineer, test pilot and NASA astronaut, 4th person to walk on the Moon. He was selected by NASA in 1963 as part of Astronaut Group 3. His 1st space flight was aboard Apollo 12, 2nd crewed mission to land on the Moon in Nov. 1969. He made his 2nd and final flight into space on the 1973 Skylab 3 mission 2nd crewed mission to the Skylab space station. After retiring from the Navy in 1975 and from NASA in 1981, he pursued his interest in painting, depicting various space-related scenes and documenting his own experiences in space as well as those of his fellow Apollo astronauts. OWEN K. GARRIOTT (1930-2019) American electrical engineer and NASA astronaut, spent 60 days aboard the Skylab space station in 1973 during the Skylab 3 mission and 10 days aboard Spacelab-1 on a Space Shuttle mission in 1983. After serving in the Navy, Garriott was an engineering professor at Stanford before attending the USAF Pilot Training Program and later joining NASA. After his NASA career, he worked for various aerospace companies, consulted on NASA-related committees, taught as an adjunct professor, and conducted research on microbes found in extreme environments. His son Richard was launched as a space tourist on board Soyuz TMA-13 in 2008, the 1st American and the 2nd person worldwide to follow a parent into space. Owen Garriott was in mission control at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhistan for the launch and was present when his son returned 12 days later.
